Travel Information
Information and advice for travelling abroad
Travel Clinic
We have a limited number of travel vaccine appointments, so please book in advance.
Ideally, vaccinations should be completed at least one month before travel, but can be given up to six months prior—provided your trip details are confirmed.
Important
Demand surges significantly in the months before summer travel, so early booking is especially important.
While we strive to maximise the number of travel appointments we do still have to provide all the other usual nursing procedures (the majority of which are time-sensitive and therefore cannot be postponed) and we cannot, therefore, guarantee vaccine / appointment availability so planning ahead is important.
- Appointments are released every Monday at midday, two weeks in advance.
- Travel vaccine clinics run at fixed times: Wednesdays and Fridays at lunchtime.
- We cannot offer appointments outside these dedicated sessions.
How to Book
- Check recommended vaccines for your destination
- If NHS vaccines are indicated, submit an eConsult
- A senior partner will review your request within 5 working days and will contact you directly to either confirm you don’t need vaccines or authorise you to book via reception.
Please Note: We only provide NHS basic travel vaccines.
We advise all patients to additionally get an in-depth travel assessment including vaccination and antimalarial advice and if appropriate medication. This is not available on the NHS but is provided privately by certain local pharmacies (such as Aqua Pharmacy) or for a more comprehensible assessment The Hospital for Tropical Diseases (both listed below)
NHS Vaccines
As per NHS Travel vaccination advise the following travel vaccines are free if indicated and available on NHS (both vaccine supplies and practice nurse appointment are often limited):
- Polio (given as a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab)
- Typhoid
- Hepatitis A
- Cholera – oral drink, 2 doses 1-6 weeks apart
These vaccines are free because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.
Which travel vaccines will I have to pay for?
The following are not routinely covered by the NHS and would need to be obtained from a private travel clinic
- Hepatitis B
- Japanese encephalitis
- Meningitis
- Rabies
- Tick-borne encephalitis
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Yellow fever
Anti-malaria medicines are also not available through the NHS. Yellow fever vaccines are only available from designated centres.
The cost of travel vaccines that are not available on the NHS will vary, depending on the vaccine and number of doses you need.
It is worth considering the cost of private vaccines or anti-malarials when budgeting for your trip
Vaccine Length of Protection:
- Diphtheria/Tetanus/Polio: 10 years, Typhoid: 3 years
- Hepatitis A: 1 dose lasts 1 year. A second dose of Hepatitis A provides cover for 25 years from the date of the second dose.
- Yellow Fever: 1 dose lasts lifelong (2016 World Health Organisation Agreement)
- Rabies: Pre-exposure course of 3 lasts 10 years (2 x post exposure doses required if you have an animal bite/scratch abroad.
